Why QR Codes Matter Now More Than Ever

From contactless payments to logins at the doctor’s office, pandemic-related precautions are fueling a surge in QR Codes. This is great news for businesses. As your customers and prospects become more accustomed to using QR Codes during the pandemic, this opens the door to greater use for customer engagement and marketing activities, as well.

Before the pandemic, for example, Payments Journal found that 13% of Americans had scanned a QR Code. During the pandemic, this jumped to 24%—an 85% increase.[1] Blue Bite, a QR Code platform, found that QR Code usage has doubled in the categories of reach, scans, and repeat scans of the same product or marketing piece.[2] If you’ve been sitting on the sidelines, it’s time to get in the QR Code game. Here are three easy ways to get started:

1. Free Wi-Fi. For many customers, nothing says “we care about you” like free Wi-Fi access. Make it easy to connect to your Wi-Fi in your store, venue, or restaurant. Scan the code—connect. It’s that easy. When you go out of your way to make your customers’ lives easier, they notice. They also feel valued.

2. Coupons. Use a QR Code to let customers access discounts and promotions right in your store. Use direct mail, signage, and point-of-sale materials to promote your offers. Consider creating an element of fun by making the discount secret. “Scan to see your discount! (Shhh! It’s a surprise.)” Change the discount at any time simply by changing it on the back end.

3. Social media followers. Just like Wi-Fi, you can take people directly to your social media accounts where they can follow you. The easier you make it to become a follower, the more likely they are to do it. Provide an incentive. If you are a coffee shop, for example, you might say: “Use this code to follow us on Facebook, and your next cup of coffee is on us!”

Use of QR Codes is growing at a rapid pace, so don’t let the opportunities pass you by. Talk to us about the wide variety of ways to use these codes to engage, delight, and deepen loyalty with your customers.
